Light Bulb Fund Raiser on Agenda at IEPEC

"Energizing Communities:  Leveraging Non-Profit Organizations to Promote CFLs" is the title of a presentation by Katherine Johnson at the International Energy Program Evaluation Conference (IEPEC) to be held in Chicago on August 14-17.  Katherine will present the process and impact results from the 2005 and 2006 light bulb fund raisers that she and Ed Thomas developed and implemented for Delta-Montrose Electric Association. This paper  highlights the successful way in which program evaluation was built into the "DNA" of the program design. The program illustrates how energy organizations can promote energy efficiency improvements, such as CFLs, without subsidies, compared to the more traditional rebate and giveaway programs.

Katherine will also provide examples of the program advertising and marketing materials, such as sales training, promotional materials, and evaluation strategies that have made this an award-winning and successful residential outreach campaign.

Marathon Features Off-Peak White Paper

http://www.marketdevelop.com/images/2007summer_thumb.jpg

A newsletter published by Marathon Water Heaters is publicizing a white paper exploring how "The Future of Residential Electric Water Heating is Off-Peak" for forward-thinking electric cooperatives.  The paper was written by Ed Thomas and Katherine Johnson in collaboration with thought leaders from the equipment manufacturer and leading electric utility cooperatives.

The white paper names specific actions that program managers can take today to preserve and grow the net revenue potential of home electric water heating loads in ways that create win-win scenarios for the cooperative and its members.

The commonly-held wisdom has been that it is always cheaper to heat water with natural gas or propane than electricity. But increasingly volatile gas prices are shifting the economics for homeowners in favor of electricity, particularly off-peak electricity.

"Beyond Home Energy Audits with Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ" is the topic for an AESP Brown Bag Seminar on Thursday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern.

Learn how program sponsors in 20+ states are beginning to transform the home improvement marketplace beyond free "clipboard" home energy audits and single-measure rebates with a whole-house approach to energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy and "carbon footprint" issues. ENERGY STARŪ provides a powerful platform for utilities, state agencies, and other organizations implementing energy efficiency programs to make a bigger difference in their communities.

Presenters will include ENERGY STAR representatives from EPA and DOE and program sponsors from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and Long Island Power Authority.  The moderator is Ed Thomas, Market Development Group.

This webcast will be an ideal "primer" for people who are considering attending the full-day workshop on the same topic to be presented on September 20 in Long Island following the AESP Technology Symposium.   To clarify, the webinar is being presented by AESP on September 6 and the workshop on September 19-20 is being presented by Market Development Group.  Attendees must register separately for each.

Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ Workshop on Sept. 19-20 in New York
    HPwES

A "Beyond Home Energy Audits with Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ" workshop will be presented on September 19-20, 2007 at Hyatt Wind Watch, Long Island, NY following the Association of Energy Services Professionals Technology Symposium.

The workshop is co-sponsored by Building Performance Institute, Conservation Services Group, U.S. Department of Energy, Edison Electric Institute, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ICF International, Long Island Power Authority and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority with Energy Finance Solutions, Electric & Gas Industries Association, Market Development Group and Performance Systems Development.

Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ is a national program from the U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE that offers a comprehensive, whole-house approach to improving energy efficiency and comfort at home, while helping to protect the environment.  Unlike typical home energy audit programs, the goal of Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ is to turn recommendations into improved homes.

  • Geothermal Heat Pump Workshop in Bismark on September 11-12
http://www.arkansasrenewableenergy.org/images/geopower_logo.gifBasin Electric Power Cooperative and Western Area Power Administration are hosting a Geothermal Heat Pump Workshop on September 11-12, 2007 in Bismarck, North Dakota.   The workshop is sponsored by the American Public Power Association, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Utility Geothermal Working Group (UGWG).

Georg Shultz, Director, Electric Staff Division for the USDA's Rural Utility Services (RUS), will offer an update on the RUS' work with cooperatives on the installation of geothermal heat pumps (GHP).  Attendees will learn how to use Western's new GHP Handbook and accompanying worksheets to determine the benefits and costs of GHP programs from the utility and customer perspectives.  They will glean knowledge from utilities that have developed and implemented the programs.  They will also get the results of "A Tale of Two Buildings", where side by side building energy use is compared, one using GHP and the other using conventional HVAC.  The workshop trainers are Katherine Johnson, Market Development Group, and Guy Nelson, UGWG Team Leader.

Katherine Johnson will be co-presenting the workshop as part of her efforts to update and enhance her previously-published "Geo Heat Pumps: Marketing Success Stories" on behalf of UGWG.

Colorado Utility Efficiency Exchange Set for Oct. 24-26 in Aspen
http://www.cuexchange.org/images/logo_cue.jpg Based on strong regional interest, a conference titled Colorado Utility Exchange: Integrating Carbon Footprint and Demand Response into Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs will be presented on October 24-26, at Aspen Meadows Resort in Aspen, Colorado.

City of Aspen Utilities and Holy Cross Energy Cooperative have agreed to serve as co-host utilities to lead the agenda planning committee efforts. The Agenda Advisory Committee is comprised of volunteers from Colorado utilities and trade allies who will meet via conference call to plan the agenda. Market Development Group is handling all event logistics.

This event's primary goal is to provide a networking and professional development forum for 50-100 mid-level staff of energy and water utilities serving Colorado and neighboring states as well as trade allies who are responsible for developing and implementing customer programs related to energy efficiency, water efficiency, demand response and renewable energy.

The event will take place in the Doerr-Hosier Conference Center that just opened this summer. It is the first building in the Roaring Fork Valley to achieve the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Gold Rating.

So many of you are still complimenting us on the holiday card we sent with teenage photos.  With summertime on our minds, we thought we'd take a moment to recap where we were then.

In this photo, Katherine is posing in her costume as the youngest bi-lingual tour guide (French and English) at Walt Disney World.  She conducted tours with visitors from around the world, including folks from Ghana, Belgium, France, Canada.and the Crown Prince (now King) of Morocco.  She worked there while growing up in Winter Park, Florida, outside Orlando.
