Northern Calif. Utilities Jointly Plan
Evaluaton
Ten California public utilities and one cooperative are
developing specific Evaluation, Measurement & Verification
(E,M&V) plans in consultation with Gary Cullen of Summit
Blue Consulting and Katherine Johnson of Market Development
Group through a joint planning collaboration with Northern
California Power Authority. The utilities are: City of
Biggs, Plumas Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative, Redding
Electric Utility, City of Gridley, City of Healdsburg, Ukiah
Public Utility, Lodi Electric Utility, City of Lompoc, City of
Lassen, City of Shasta Lake, and Turlock Irrigation
District.
The E,M&V plans include a review of
current programs, establishment of energy efficiency
priorities and determination of best course of action to help
these utilities provide energy efficiency programs to
residential and commercial customers. In addition,
Katherine will collaborate with Gary to develop
comprehensive E,M&V plans focusing primarily on commercial
and industrial programs for Silicon Valley Power and the City
of Palo Alto.
California legislation requires all
publicly-owned utilities to report to the California Energy
Commission and its local governing boards about current and
projected energy efficiency programs, and to provide an
independent assessment of measured savings.

Greetings!
We like to think our focus is tactical responses
to strategic marketing needs. But some folks just
see us as event planners. It's easy to see
why.
Our first
Utility Energy Forum in Tahoe City as the event manager
is set for later this month. Our role as the "back
office" for Peak Load Management Alliance's Web
Workshops continues. And the workshop we developed
for Edison Electric Institute was well received in San
Diego last week.
Please call or email when we can
help you. We don't just plan events. Really.
Sincerely,
Katherine
Johnson

PLMA
Offers Demand Response Web
Workshop
"Technology Solutions for
Demand Response: What's Possible for
Residential and Small Commercial Customers" is
the topic for the next PLMA Web Workshop on Wednesday,
April 9, 2008 at 2 p.m. (Eastern) to be presented
by the Peak Load Management Alliance.
This web
workshop will explore the options for utilities looking
to establish or enhance their technology platform for
implementing demand response (DR) programs for
residential and small commercial customers. The
discussion will include: · Southern
California Edison offering the perspective of a utility
that has tested and deployed a range of DR technology
solutions. Mark will review the technologies
currently available from established as well as emerging
providers. · Cooper Power Systems -
Cannon offering a product/service provider's perspective
and sharing the varying deployment strategies of their
utility clients. They currently have about 450
utility customers, including Baltimore Gas &
Electric that recently committed to an approximate 400
MW load control program that will eventually replace and
expand their legacy program and integrate with their
future AMI network, as well as Pacific Gas and Electric,
awarded last year, which will be about 350-400 MW when
completed in three years. ·
Comverge offering its perspective as both a product and
curtailment service provider with insight into how
utilities choose to purchase systems or service.
Comverge currently has over 2,000 Mw under management,
including 771 Mw under their direct control in virtual
peaking plants.
The presenters are: - Mark
Martinez, Manager, Demand Response Program Development,
Southern California Edison; - Steve Saenz, Manager of
Conservation, Austin Energy with Dave Hyland, Executive
Sales Director, Comverge, Inc.; and - Dan Merilatt,
Manager, Demand Response Programs, Cooper Power Systems
- Cannon. The moderator is Ed Thomas of Market
Development Group.

"Marketing
Communications that Work" at
ACI
"Marketing Communications that
Work" is the title of a sesson by Ed Thomas and
Katherine Johnson on Thursday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m.
during the ACI Home Performance Conference set for April
07-11 at the Hilton Pittsburgh.
Motivating
homeowners to make comprehensive changes requires
overcoming significant barriers and developing
specialized marketing materials. The session will
explore examples from award-winning energy efficiency
marketing programs. Receive a copy of these marketing
materials and the rationale behind developing these
successful programs. Session attendees will learn
the marketing communications tactics that innovative
program designers are implementing to: -
Leverage the latest program evaluation research findings
on non-energy benefits such as comfort, health, safety,
and home value - Leverage channel partners such as
remodelers, HVAC installers, plumbers, and Realtors who
are key influencers in homeowner decision-making -
Integrate carbon footprint and other community value
messages in non-traditional ways to appeal to the early
adopter and high visible market niches
The
session will award Continuing Education Credits on
behalf of Building Performance Institute; Residential
Energy Services Network; National Association of
Certified Home Inspectors; and National
Association of the Remodeling Industry.
Two posters sessions related to the session
topic will be presented during the conference as
well. They are: "Teaching Customers to Value
Energy Efficiency: A Comparison of CFL Fund
Raisers" by Katherine Johnson, and "Home Energy Makeovers -
Creating a Market for Energy Efficiency Home
Improvements" by Ed
Thomas.

"Intro to Demand
Response" Workshop for Cooperatives at Connect 2008 in
Portland
"Demand Response Program
Design and Implementation For Residential and Commercial
Member-Owners" is the topic of a pre-conference
workshop on Monday, May 12, 2008 just before the CONNECT
2008 Conference set for May 12-15, 2008 at the downtown
Hilton in Portland, Oregon. More than 500 co-op
communicators, member services and marketing
professionals will attend the Conference co-sponsored by
Touchstone Energy and the National Rural Electric
Cooperative Association. The co-presenters are Ed
Thomas and Katherine Johnson of Market Development
Group.
Peak load constraints and dramatic
wholesale market price spikes are encouraging utilities
to reevaluate the value and benefits of promoting
residential and commercial demand response programs such
as: Utility load control, Critical peak pricing, and
Off-peak water/space heating marketing
programs.
This workshop will help cooperative
staff members: - Better understand how demand
response, critical peak pricing and off-peak marketing
programs can increase both cooperative net revenue
margins and member satisfaction while reducing wholesale
power costs and supply constraints. - Discover
how cooperatives are developing and implementing (and
communicating and marketing) programs that aggressively
promote electric space and water heating in ways that
help manage residential and commercial energy demand
through direct load control and innovative rate
design. - Learn what your cooperative can do to
introduce new programs and enhance existing
ones
Market Development Group will also have a
display in the Exposition Hall and Ed Thomas will
present during the general session. At the CONNECT
website, you can listen to an audio clip of Ed Thomas
discussing the workshop at: click
here and explaining the value of the Exposition at:
