Utility Energy Forum "Early Bird" Discount Ends on March 15

The Early Bird registration Discount ends March 15 for the 28th Annual Utility Energy Forum set for April 30 - May 2 at the Granlibakken Conference Center in Tahoe City, Calif.

This year's theme is:  "Global Climate Change and Energy Efficiency:  A Natural Marriage or a Shotgun Wedding?"  Over 75 energy industry professionals are expected to attend and over 20 organizations are helping to underwrite event expenses.

The event agenda and exhibit floor plan are now online.  The agenda will explore how utilities in California, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest are integrating energy efficiency with global climate change messages.

This event is presented by Utility Energy Forum, Inc., a non-profit California corporation led by volunteers from various utilities that contract with Market Development Group for logistical support.  A Planning Committee of volunteers assists the Board to develop the agenda and recruit presenters.

Statewide Event on March 19

A Pennsylvania Home Energy Conference is set for March 18-19 at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College, Penn.  The conference theme is "Grow Green with ENERGY STARŪ and a Whole House Approach."

The event is intended to help area builders, remodelers and contractors learn how to turn customer demand for green, energy efficient homes into business opportunity and growth.

Attendees will learn about PA Home Energy - a new program to help PA consumers reduce home energy use, and integrate whole house performance with green design. The pilot program is being rolled out through the 23-county Allegheny Power service region, introducing ENERGY STARŪ programs for both new home construction and existing homes.

Ed Thomas of Market Development Group will be among the presenters helping attendees learn about marketing, sales, and customer service strategies that can create demand and higher profit margins for their company.

4 Utility Case Studies to be Showcased at AGA/EEI Customer Service Conf. on April 2
Home Performance with ENERGY STARA "How Energy Efficiency Issues Impact Utility Customer Service Operation" Workshop will be presented immediately following the American Gas Association and Edison Electric Institute Customer Service Conference on April 2 in San Diego.

The workshop goal is to help utility customer service executives better understand how energy efficiency issues can increase both member satisfaction and shareholder returns.  The workshop will focus on four "Energy Efficiency in Customer Service" utility case studies as well as those key success factors necessary to implement utility-wide strategies and department-level tactics that bring innovation to utility core processes.

Featured case studies include:
-- "Customer Service Representatives on the Front Line of Energy Efficiency at WE Energies." Achieve higher customer satisfaction scores! Learn innovative ways for customer service representatives to incorporate the value of energy efficiency as a way to mitigate high bill complaints and increase awareness of energy efficiency programs.
-- "Generating Interest in Demand Response Programs at E.ON-US. " Leverage direct-response, out-bound calling applications to achieve low-cost customer enrollment and increase sign-ups for demand response programs.
-- "Linking Energy Efficiency to Energy Delivery at Progress Energy." Hear about an innovative employee communications program that ties customer awareness of energy efficiency services to the performance and incentive goals for the field services operations personnel.
-- "Treating Trade Allies like Family at NSTAR." Learn how a vendor-partnership program can support energy efficiency program goals.

This workshop is intended primarily for AGA and EEI member utility executives and staff with responsibilities for customer service operations.  However, anyone may register and attend.  The workshop is co-sponsored by the American Gas Association and Edison Electric Institute and presented by Market Development Group.

Home Performance Compendium and Calif. Workshop Proceedings Now Online
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR banner

An updated edition of the "Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ Industry Compendium" is now online at www.hpwes.org.  The Compendium, first published last fall, offers an online snapshot of key home performance industry programs, allies and resources for prospective program sponsors along with a bibliography of published papers, presentations, proceedings and research studies regarding home performance topics.

The Compendium update was introduced at the "California Utility Collaboration to Transform Existing Homes with Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ" workshop that was presented recently at the Southern California Gas Company's Energy Resources Center in Downey, Calif.  The workshop and compendium were co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy with support from Conservation Services Group and Lockheed Martin with Building Performance Institute, California Building Performance Contractors Association, Electric & Gas Industries Association and Market Development Group. The host utility was Southern California Gas Company.

The workshop brought together electric and gas utilities in California and neighboring states in an introduction and overview of the emerging field of comprehensive "home performance" improvements to existing homes. The workshop goal was to encourage broader adoption of such innovative programs across the West, building on the experience and knowledge developed in similar programs in California, Oregon and elsewhere. This new approach is essential to reach the deep home energy savings needed to meet energy resource, security, economic and climate needs. To see a gallery of workshop photos, click on the link below, go to Workshop and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Discover "How Demand Response Fits in Integrated Resource Plans" on March 25
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR The Peak Load Management Alliance will present a Web Workshop on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. (Eastern) that explores how utilities such as Pacific Gas and Electric; Duke Energy; San Diego Gas and Electric; Kansas City Power and Light and others assess Demand Side Management (DSM) resources, especially Demand Response (DR), in a utility's Integrated Resource Planning process.

Because DR resources, unlike energy efficiency programs, may be dispatched selectively by system operators to meet short term load requirements, the benefits of demand response in Integrated Resource Planning is linked to system planning assumptions. Stand-alone cost-effectiveness analyses may no longer be sufficient. Utilities and Independent System Operators are increasingly modeling DR resources by developing generation profiles to mimic the characteristics of the resource in planning models.

Discover the finer details such as:
-- Monetizing per-kWh and per-kW system cost reductions
-- DSM as reliability/ancillary resources from a risk reduction perspective
-- Other avoided costs and system benefits

The presenters are:
-- Bruce Perlstein, Ph.D., Managing Director, Strategy, Finance & Economics, LLC
-- Ken Skinner, Ph.D., Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Integral Analytics
-- Daniel Violette, Ph.D., Principal, Summit Blue Consulting
The moderator is Stuart Schare, Senior Consultant, Summit Blue Consulting.

Ed Thomas is Sir Studley... in "Once Upon a Mattress"
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR

Not a typo. You read it right.  Ed Thomas of Market Development Group is playing the part of Sir Studley in the current production of "Once Upon a Mattress" at the Magic Circle Players community theatre group in Montrose, Colo.  The Broadway musical-comedy is best known for launching the career of Carol Burnett in the leading role of this musical adaptation of the "Princess and the Pea" fairy tale.

Yes, Ed sings and dances in this production (we told you it was a comedy).  He has no solos.  This is Ed's first musical theatre performance since appearing in "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Guys and Dolls" at Glen Burnie (Md.) High School in 1973-75.  At Magic Circle, Ed has performed as Capt. Queeg in "Caine-Mutiny Court Martial," Otto Frank in "Diary of Anne Frank," Mr. Beaver in "Lion, Witch and Wardrobe," and more.
