AGA &
EEI To Focus on
Energy Efficiency at Customer Service
Conference
A "How Energy Efficiency Issues Impact Utility Customer
Service Operations" workshop is set for April 2 in San Diego
immediately following the AGA/EEI Customer Service
Conference.
This will be an
interactive, informative discussion on where "energy
efficiency" fits best in utility customer service
organizations.Energy
efficiency is shifting from a stand-alone program initiative
to become more integrated into all aspects of utility
operations, including customer
services.
This workshop will focus on "Energy Efficiency in
Customer Service" case studies that articulate how energy
efficiency is impacting customer services operations such as
customer systems, meter reading, call centers, credit &
collection, billing and more. The studies also offer an
overview of the key success factors necessary to implement
utility-wide strategies and department-level tactics that
bring innovation to utility core processes in order to
integrate energy efficiency, demand response and carbon
reduction issues.
Who should
attend? AGA and EEI member company senior and mid-level
executives involved in customer service activities as well as
trade allies critical to program design, implementation and
evaluation. AGA EEI Event

28th Utility Energy Forum Agenda Now
Online
The agenda is now online for the 28th Annual Utility Energy
Forum set for April 30 - May 2 at the Granlibakken Conference
Center in Tahoe City, CA. This year's theme is: "Global
Climate Change and Energy Efficiency: A Natural Marriage or a
Shotgun Wedding?"
Come explore how utilities in
California, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest are integrating
energy efficiency and demand response with growing concerns
about carbon footprint and other global climate change
messages.
The Utility Energy Forum is a non-profit
consortium of utility professionals. This annual meeting
provides attendees, speakers and exhibitors with a high
quality, low key opportunity to exchange information and learn
from each other about current and emerging industry
issues.
This event is presented by Utility Energy
Forum, Inc., a non-profit California corporation led by
volunteers from various utilities that contract with Market
Development Group for logistical support. A Planning Committee
of volunteers assists the Board to develop the agenda and
recruit presenters.

Home Performance with ENERGY
STARŪ Workshop Set for March 5-6 in California -
Just 2 Weeks
Away
A
"California
Utility Collaboration to Transform Existing Homes with
Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ" workshop will be
presented on March 5-6,
2008 at the Southern California
Gas Company's Energy Resources Center in Downey, CA.
The
workshop is co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy with
support from Conservation Services Group and Lockheed
Martin with Building Performance Institute, California
Building Performance Contractors Association Electric
& Gas Industries Association, and Market Development
Group. The host utility is Southern California Gas
Company.
This
workshop brings together electric and gas utilities in
California and neighboring states in an introduction and
overview of the emerging field of comprehensive "home
performance" improvements to existing homes. The
workshop's goal is to encourage broader adoption of such
innovative programs across the West, building on the
experience and knowledge developed in similar programs
in California, Oregon and elsewhere. This new approach
is essential to reach the deep home energy savings
needed to meet energy resource, security, economic and
climate needs.
All Registrants will receive a new edition
of the "Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ Industry
Compendium" - an online snapshot of key home performance
industry programs, allies and resources for prospective
program sponsors along with a bibliography of published
papers, presentations, proceedings and research studies
regarding home performance
topics.

Anaheim, EGIA to Present Energy Makeover
Contest
Sponsors are now being recruited for an Anaheim Home
Energy Makeover contest that the Electric & Gas
Industries Association is administering with Anaheim
Public Utilities to enhance the promotion of the city's
Home Performance with ENERGY STARŪ program.
Technical support for the contest is being provided by
the California Building Performance Contractors
Association.
This
Home Energy Makeover Contest will be conducted in the
greater Anaheim, CA area later this year. The
Contest goals are to: - Demonstrate the value of
whole house home performance and measures that a
homeowner could do that contribute toward a more
positive cash flow from energy savings when financed. -
Demonstrate how to conduct a whole house energy and
environmental analysis, and communicate the results to
homeowner, contractor and financier. - Model a
collaborative process for a home improvement/performance
contractor supported by other energy and
environmental-related product/service providers.
In May 2007, Anaheim Public
Utilities (APU) launched their Home Performance with
ENERGY STAR program called the Home Investment package
(HIP) with program support provided by the Electric
& Gas Industries Association (EGIA). EGIA is a
75-year-old, non-profit organization dedicated to
advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy
solutions through the home improvement, appliance
retailer and renewable energy industries. EGIA serves a
rapidly growing nationwide network of contractors,
distributors, manufactures and retailers. EGIA is a
national leader in providing resource efficiency
services, utility sponsored financing, and rebate
administration to utilities, municipalities and water
companies. EGIA also provides member contractors with
industry leading energy efficiency and renewable energy
financing, through its National Energy Efficiency
Financing Program and GEOSmart Sustainable Financing
Solutions.

Kansas Co-op Helps Renters
and Landlords Embrace Energy Efficiency with
How$mart(sm)
An innovative energy efficiency program
aimed at helping achieve the split incentives of renters
and landlord was introduced at a day-long Home
Performance workshop presented just before AESP's 18th
National Energy Services Conference in Florida.
Midwest Energy, a cooperative with over
89,000
electric and gas members in western Kansas faced three
significant challenges to developing energy efficiency
programs: - The existing housing market in the
cities and towns in the utility's service territory was
old, with a median age of 34 years; - The rental
properties were often substandard however landlords were
reluctant to invest energy efficiency improvements, as
the tenants paid their own utility bills; and - The
low population density of the service area added to cost
pressures compared to more densely populated areas.
In response, Midwest Energy has developed its
How$mart(sm) Program that leveraged its in-house
experience in home energy audits while providing a
payment approach that funds energy improvements through
the energy savings. In effect, Midwest Energy created a
"residential energy services company" in which Midwest
Energy identifies cost-effective improvements through its
energy audits, coordinates the installations through
local improvement contactors, and then provides the
financing on the tenant's utility bill.
Midwest
Energy's program has received endorsement and support
from its public service commission, the Kansas Energy
Council, and the energy advisory group from the
Governor's office. Click on the link below to see the
presentation made in Florida by Michael Volker,
Director, Regulatory & Energy Services of Midwest
Energy, Inc.

turn customer demand for green, energy efficient homes
into business opportunity and growth. Attendees will
learn about PA Home Energy - a new program to help PA
consumers reduce home energy use, and integrate whole
house performance with green design. The pilot program
is being rolled out through the 23-county Allegheny
Power service region, introducing ENERGY STARŪ programs
for both new home construction and existing homes.
Ed Thomas of Market Development
Group will be among the presenters helping attendees
